Maddie Burnham

Choreographed:

  • Setting Scalpels Free

  • Hunger of the Pine

  • Change is Everything

  • Let Me Follow

Bio:

Maddie Burnham is from Victoria, Minnesota where she attended Mayer Lutheran High School and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a BA in Theater and Dance. She has been choreographing for 12 years now for musical theater, dance studios, and her own dance company. She founded the company in 2019 back in Minnesota.

Being able to choreograph, produce, market, and put on full-evening dance work was her best experience yet as a creator. It is so rewarding to see the dancers shine and to see the work finally on display for others to relate to and enjoy. She hopes this company touches those who witness the work the same way it touches her. Maddie looks forward to sparking more ideas, collaborative opportunities, and performance outlets in the future.

Co-Choreographers

Annie Carlson

Choreographed:

  • Hammer to the Heart

Description of Piece:

This piece is informed by the internal and external feelings experienced from being cast aside and into the shadows. Feelings like helplessness, frustration, and confusion arise as one attempts to analyze the situation's cause and cope with the onset of emotions from it. Although the internal feelings are strong, the outward presentation must remain subdued, and the desire to seek aid from others is interrupted by the inability to identify what is needed.

  • Little Parcels of Endless Time

  • Steal

Description of Pieces:

Steal - Addiction is powerful in its ability to control and isolate. How far will people go to satisfy addiction’s insatiable hunger? How many loved ones are left behind as a result?

Little Parcels of an Endless Time - Bad memories often have more impact on us than good ones. They can sneak up at inconvenient times, reminding us of our trauma and regrets; they can build upon each other to create a false truth, and play over and over in our minds to distract us from every good thing life has given us.

Jessica Doro

Choreographed:

  • I Need A Forest Fire

  • Woods

  • Fade into You

Description of Pieces:

I Need a Forest Fire - In this piece, dancers begin by finding a place to plant their roots. The energy is very individualized and somewhat selfish, while each person is trying to find, explore, and understand their place in the world like weedy vines. Throughout the piece, there are moments of frustration–feeling beheld to societal norms that we do not want to be a part of, fighting against external and internal expectations for ourselves. We feel the need to burn everything down, wanting to wipe it all away and be left alone in the ashes.

Woods - Left in the aftermath of the forest fire, we feel isolated and need to process what we’ve been through. While one person is caught up in their own anxiety, feeling lost and panicked, the other is trying to move through the pain, to gather and build a safe space for themself. When these two personalities initially collide, there is uncertainty. We are curious about each other and also afraid to let someone else in. Throughout the piece, a sense of trust and camaraderie slowly starts to build but is still backed by uncertainty and a desire to remain rooted in individuality rather than community. We experience crown shyness like the trees and want our own stories to remain. In the end, however, we learn to trust and accept the opportunity for community that is offered to us. We focus on each other, and, although it is still scary, know that we can let go of the fear and self-protective behaviors that held us back in the past.

Fade into You - When looking at ourselves in the mirror, we often only see the surface. If we spend time looking deeper, we may not always like what we see, or we are afraid to expose the parts of ourselves that we deem dark or unacceptable. When we come to face the deepest parts of ourselves, to understand and acknowledge all of our strengths and weaknesses, it can be both powerful and overwhelming. This piece is an invitation to say hello to our shadow selves, to delve into that inner self. Our shadow selves are a crucial part of us. Listening to and understanding our shadows can help us become a fuller version of ourselves. A self that is grounded, intuitive, self-aware, and accepting of others.

Andy Lupinek

Choreographed:

  • I Need a Forest Fire

  • Summer

Description of Pieces:

I Need a Forest Fire - Rooted in the metaphor of a tree stretching desperately toward the light, I Need a Forest Fire explores the tension of fighting for space, recognition, and purpose in a crowded world. Set to the ethereal and haunting sounds of James Blake and Bon Iver, the choreography unearths the quiet desperation and subtle deception that can arise when the pursuit of the spotlight overshadows authenticity. Each movement echoes the push and pull of ambition—branches tangled, shadows cast—asking what must burn away for the light to finally break through.

Summer - Set to the haunting undertone of Hayden Calnin’s Summer, this piece explores the quiet turbulence of grief in the wake of loss—whether of a person, a dream, or a part of oneself. Within Shadows, the choreography navigates the emotional and often unpredictable terrain between denial and acceptance. Honing in on moments of collective solitude, punctuated by sporadic, powerful bursts of energy, the work delves into the dimness of loneliness and the slow, aching path toward release.

Andy started his journey with 8:20 Dance Company in 2020. Minnesota-born and raised, Andy studied Theatre and Arts Administration at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, MN.
